About This Site
LossAppraisal.com is an education site about insurance appraisal — the appraisal-clause process that resolves the amount of a property insurance loss. It's written for policyholders trying to understand the process they're in, attorneys deciding whether to recommend it, and adjusters and appraisers who work inside it.
I'm Leland Coontz. I work as a party-appointed appraiser and as an umpire — dozens of appraisals over more than two decades of property claims work on both sides of the industry, including appointment as umpire by a California Superior Court. The services side of my practice lives at lossappraiser.com; this site is where the education goes.
Nothing here is legal advice. Every citation is verified against primary sources before publishing, and where the law is unsettled, the articles say so.
In an appraisal now, or headed toward one?
